KMPL (May 17, 2010) – The 7th annual Seoul Green Film Festival will kick off on May 20th. It is the first film festival of its kind in Korea in which environmental and conservationist issues are highlighted. The week long festival, a carbon-neutral event, aims to raise public awareness of the most pressing environmental, conservationist, and life issues facing individual societies and the world today.

The festival will feature films from around the world touching on topics ranging from personal, heart-warming stories, such as a dog trying to survive after being rescued from the cruel conditions of a dog meat market (Gui-dong, the Meat Dog, South Korea, 2010) to larger global worries such as the potential world water shortage (Blue Gold: World Water Wars, USA, 2008). The acclaimed Yann Arthurs-Bertrand documentary, Home, will also be featured at the festival.

Perhaps of particular interest to some of KMPL’s supporters, Asiatic Black Bears: Return to Nature, a South Korean documentary about the restoration program for the critically endangered Asiatic black bear, the first program of its kind in the world, will also be shown along with a workshop with the makers of the film on May 22nd. Asiatic black bears are listed as “vulnerable” globally, but are facing extinction in South Korea. The restoration centre, as well as the majority of the species’ wild population are in Jirisan National Park.

The festival runs from Wednesday, May 20th through to the 26th at Lotte Cinema in Myeong-dong, Seoul. Visit the festival’s website for directions and for a complete schedule of showtimes. We support the festival in encouraging patrons to use public transportation to get to the festival.
